A FORMOSAN WATERWORKS SYSTEM.
The lower house of the Japanese Diet has sanctinned a loan of $950,000 gold to the Formosan government for the installation of a plant for supplying 3,000,000 gals, of water daily to Taihoku. The water is to be pumped from the river into a settling tank, thence over a series of two filterbeds; a second pump will force it into a double compartment reservoir upon a hill 100 ft. directly above. The pumps will be operated by electric power. From the reservoir the water is to be conducted in a 20-in. iron pipe a distance of two miles over a plain to Taihoku. The distributing main there will be a 12-in. iron pipe. Fireplugs will be set and private houses will be furnished with fittings and service-pipes. The buildings are almost entirely one and two-story, and no higher buildings are being erected; hence, the pressure to be obtained from the reservoir is sufficient.
