A CAUSE OF HOSE BURSTING.
像许多的软管长度就是ce in the various fire departments throughout the country burst after comparatively short service, the cause of such mishaps has not been explained. It is, therefore, necessary to point out that the best hose, unless carefully cleansed and dried, will deteriorate and become useless in a very short time. One of the great causes of deterioration occurs where it is exposed to acids. Carboys frequently burst, and the fumes come in contact with acids, and these acids eat through the texture, thus causing it to rot, and, after lying for any length of time unused in the fire house, it is brought into service and at once put under high pressure. That it should burst under such conditions is a thing to hr expected. Most of thibrands of hose used in the fire service are reliable and are tested up to too pounds pressure before being used, and there is nothing to prevent this hose lasting for many years, provided it is carefully looked after. W here hose comes in contact with acids and these acids are not thoroughly taken out of the fabric before being placed away in the fire station, there is nothing to prevent its rapid deterioration. It is, therefore, necessary that those in charge of fire stations should make a special effort to sec that hose is thoroughly washed and dried before being laid aside waiting for the next fire alarm call.
The New York Fress, writing editorially on the proposed Catskill water supply, says that under the plans now under consideration for that supply the city “will spend more than $160,000,000, and, when tliis is done, it will still be looking for water; for admittedly, by the report of the city commission, when the water thus obtained is finally delivered here the*’demand will virtually have outstripped the new supply. So while the city is spending one hundred and sixty millions to get a water supply without water, it must go on still seeking water.”
