Apr. 18—KENNEWICK, Wa. — Five people were evacuated from a Kennewick senior living home after a fire broke out in the attic.

The owner of Colonial House Adult Family Home at 3 W. Third Ave. was asleep on the second floor of the large home when he woke up to a smoke alarm sounding and the smell of smoke, Kennewick Fire Chief Chad Michael said.

The owner called 911, but waited to start evacuating the patients because of concerns about their medical needs and the cold temperature outside.

All of the seniors living in the home are on the first floor.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes, and noticed the smell of smoke outside the building. They helped get the residents out and then started looking for the fire.

They found it in the attic, pulled down the ceiling in one room and extinguished it.

Crews from the Pasco Fire Department and Benton County Fire District 1 helped put out the blaze.

No one was hurt, but one person was taken to Trios Southridge Hospital because they were having chest pains.

Damage was limited, but the electrical meter needed to be pulled out as they were fighting the fire, the chief said.

The residents are staying at the Baymont Inn in Kennewick until the electrical system can be fixed in a few days.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Michael said working smoke alarms played a major role in saving people’s lives and limiting the amount of damage.

Firefighters recommend having smoke alarms installed in every bedroom and outside of sleeping areas and on every level of a home.
