Jul. 19—Two houses were heavily damaged in a large fire early Tuesday in Central City.
The four-alarm fire was reported at 2:28 a.m. at Baronne and First streets, the New Orleans Fire Department said. No one was injured.
It started at a vacant blighted home, officials said, and spread to neighboring houses. The flames “began to consume” a two-story, wood-framed double that was next to the vacant building, they said, prompting firefighters to call for backup.
The landlord told officials he contacted the residents of the two-story house, and no one was home. No one was in the residence on the other side of the blighted building either, the Fire Department said.
It was deemed a four-alarm fire, which means the Fire Department requested backup three times. Firefighters controlled the flames at 4:16 a.m. but remained at the scene several hours to tend to “smoldering debris.”
In total, 24 Fire Department vehicles carrying 69 personnel responded.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
