Mountain Center (CA) — An inch of rain fell early Sunday on Mount San Jacinto, helping turn the tide on the Mountain Fire, so much so that crews now say they’ll completely surround the fire by Wednesday.
The fire crews increased their containment from 49 percent to up to 68 percent by late Sunday. The revised prediction that they’ll reach full containment by Wednesday is two days earlier than initially estimated, Cal Fire spokesman Edwin Simpson said.
The fire’s size remained stable at a little more than 27,000 acres, or 42 square miles. Five firefighters have had minor injuries, although details were not available late Sunday.
Rock slides and debris flows were reported in the area burned by the fire, and radar indicated flash flooding, according to the weather service. By late Sunday morning, though, authorities lifted all the associated evacuation orders. That included roughly 4,000 residents of the Idyllwild-Fern Valley area.
