MI Fire Department Staffing Cut in Half

萨吉诺(MI) — The Saginaw police are not the only city department that has seen significant budget and staffing cuts in recent years.

The Saginaw Fire Department, which once staffed more than 100 firefighters, currently has 50 reporting for duty.

The department received more than $10 million from Saginaw’s general fund in the 2005-2006 fiscal year, which has been cut to nearly $7.5 million in the 2012-2013 approved budget.

Captain Tom Raines, president of the Saginaw firefighters’ union, said there were 108 firefighters when he started there in 1994. Staffing and budget cuts have limited the department’s effectiveness, Raines said.
