2月16-Five人,包括三个奥克兰firefighters, were taken to local hospitals after a fire broke out in an Oakland Housing Authority Building residential tower on Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

Firefighters responding to the 4:13 p.m. call of a fire at a residential tower at Seventh and Market streets arrived to find heavy smoke and residents screaming for help from balconies, Oakland fire officials said. The fire started in the sixth floor of the 12-story, 80-unit building.

The smoke quickly flooded Belton’s apartment, making it impossible for them to see each other. They called out to each other and decided they were going to have to exit through the window.

“我们要跳了起来,因为我们不打算成功,”Doss说。

The couple made it to their balcony, hung onto the railing and swung down to the fifth-floor balcony where they were able to get on a fire engine ladder to safety.

Residents were “screaming for help” on the balconies when firefighters arrived at the scene, said Oakland Fire Chief Reginald Freeman .in a video posted to Twitter by fire officials.

“We also at the same time had other rescues and grabs that we had to make with civilians that were trapped inside the smoke-filled building,” Freeman said, standing outside of the residential tower. “It was nothing but the dedication and the heart of these personnel to where we had the outcomes that we had today.”

Roughly 60 firefighters attacked the fire with the first units arriving 3 minutes after the first call. Shortly afterward at 4:24 p.m., firefighters called a mayday for two firefighters who were down. The blaze was under control at 5:04 p.m., fire officials said.

The injured firefighters and residents “are doing fine,” Freeman said. “They’re alert and oriented.”

The fire damaged the sixth and seventh floors and displaced about 10 residents, Freeman said.

San Francisco fire officials said on Twitter that their “thoughts and prayers are with the (Oakland Fire Department) and City of Oakland.”
