A constant air attack quickly brought the containment of a fire that burned through 250 acres in the Azusa hills up to 70 percent after less than 24 hours of firefighting, reports San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
Officials expect full containment of the Madre Fire by Friday at the latest, but the goal is to beat that date, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Keith Mora.
“Once you’ve got 70 percent, you’ve got a real good hold of it,” Mora said. “(The fire) will decrease significantly in the next day.”
Mora credited a “nonstop barrage of water every two minutes” from 13 helicopters and retardant drops from two fixed-wing tankers with keeping the fire at bay. Some helicopters carried as much as 2,200 gallons per drop.
