The Little Devil Fire, burning in a remote area between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs, was 50 percent contained Friday evening, Forest Service officials said, reports durangoherald.com.
Using more accurate mapping Friday, the Forest Service determined the fire had consumed 48 acres, not 70 acres as previously reported. The blaze burned in the San Juan National Forest near U.S. Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 151.
“Fire resources are close to completing all the containment lines and mop-up operations have begun,” said Forest Service spokeswoman Jodi Mallozzi.
A crew of 93 responders, along with five aircrafts, were aided by some light precipitation Friday afternoon, Mallozzi said.
A total of 16,880 gallons of water had been dropped since lightning ignited the fire Aug. 18.
“During the course of the fire, the single-engine air tankers were highly effective in the steep terrain and played a key role supporting firefighter’s success on the ground,” Mallozzi said.
Forest Roads 626 and 627 will remain closed for public safety, and the fire poses no risk to structures or private property.
