A woman rescued by firefighters from a house fire inWest Orangeearly Sunday died of smoke inhalation at an area hospital hours later, officials said.

A family pet also died in the fire while a man escaped the blaze on his own, a township spokesman said.

The fire, which broke out in the basement of a home on Valley Way shortly before 4:30 a.m., took about two hours to bring under control.

The woman was unresponsive when firefighters reached her on the second floor, where she was trapped. First responders gave her CPR and she regained a pulse while en route to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, authorities said.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, it’s not considered suspicious. The house is uninhabitable, the spokesman said.

The woman’s identity hasn’t been released pending completion of family notifications.
