Syracuse, N.Y. — A Syracuse family’s dog died in ahouse fireSunday night.
Flames shot through the roof of the house at 955-957 Ackerman Ave. and spread to a neighbor’s home, at 959-961 Ackerman Ave., Syracuse firefighters said.
超过50 Syracuse city firefighters responded to the double house fire at about 7:50 p.m. Firefighters arrived within three minutes of the first 911 call and reported heavy fire in the attic of the house, at 955-957 Ackerman Ave., Deputy Chief John Kane said in a news release.
“Crews immediately began searching both buildings for trapped or endangered occupants while working to extinguish the flames,” Kane said in the release.
Firefighters spent about 20 minutes working to extinguish the fire at 959-961 Ackerman Ave. and 30 minutes to extinguish the fire at 955-957 Ackerman Ave., he said. A family dog died in the fire at 955-957 Ackerman Ave., Kane said.
“No civilians or firefighters were injured,” he said.
After firefighters extinguished the flames at 955-957 Ackerman Ave., smoke, scorch marks and broken windows could be seen from the top floor of the 2 1/2-story wood-framed house.
Because the fire spread to a neighboring home, Kane said, “incident commanders immediately called for a second alarm assignment, which brought a total of 50 firefighters to the scene.”
National Grid, American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance, the Syracuse Police Department and the local chapter of the American Red Cross also responded.
The Red Cross is helping “displaced occupants from both houses,” Kane said.
The house at 955-957 Ackerman Ave. is advertised forrentand boasts it’s “perfect student housing,” close to SU and SUNY ESF campuses.
Fire investigators are still working to pinpoint the cause and origin of the fire.
