Firefighters Rescue OH Driver After Car Goes into Sinkhole

A driver was rescued from her car Wednesday after it fell into a sinkhole in Toledo, Ohio.

The street gave way underneath Pamela Knox’s Chevy Malibu as she was driving, according to a report from theToledo Blade(http://bit.ly/16T9qzn). The vehicle landed on its wheels, however water from a burst pipe began to fill the car’s back seat.

A Toledo firefighter made his way down into the sinkhole and asked Mrs. Knox if she was all right. He asked if she could open her car door, which she could. He then helped her out and then up a ladder to the surface.

Officials estimated the hole to be about 20 feet wide. A city spokesperson said the sinkhole was caused by the collapse of combined sanitary and storm sewers. She called the break the largest in recent city history. A six-inch cast-iron water main from 1895 was broken as the car and street asphalt fell into the hole.
