Firefighters Contain Five-Alarm Fire in San Jose (CA)

A ferocious warehouse fire in San Jose this morning created a health warning, closed schools and triggered a power outage. At the height of the fire, nearly 100 firefighters were on the scene of the inferno, reports KGO-TV San Francisco.

As of 11 a.m., firefighters were putting out hotspots, but the flames did a lot of damage earlier this morning.

There was no build up to this warehouse fire off Julian Street in San Jose; the flames got big, quickly, just after the call came in before 5:45 this morning. Firefighters immediately knew it was too dangerous to go inside and started sending water from afar.

“The danger is we don’t know what is inside the building. A lot of companies do not tell us they are moving out and leave debris in the building,” said San Jose Fire Capt. Cleo Doss.

The 80,000 square foot warehouse was split into two, separated by a fire wall and was mostly vacant with only a few businesses inside — including a roof and tile company. The flames gobbled up the building. The explosions speeded up the process causing the roof to collapse.

The fire quickly escalated to five-alarms with more than 100 firefighters on the scene including several from nearby cities. People and their pets were evacuated from their homes on West Court almost immediately after the fire started. Some people were sleeping when they heard a banging on their door.
