While the truck is proceeding or prior to making the connection to the engine at the plug, remove the steamer and one side of the 2 ½-inch connection. Why remove the 2 ½-inch connection? This is for a ball valve connection–again, it may never be used, but it allows for the option of a 3-inch supply line or bleeding the 5-inch line if needed during the operation. It is a simple step that provides additional options on the fireground.
After connecting, flush the hydrant to remove any debris that may be in the hydrant. Many may not find this a necessary step as it takes time, however if you end up with debris in your pump or, worse yet, it works through the pump into your line and clogs your nozzle, you will wish someone would have taken the time to flush the hydrant!
