According toa report from theChicago Tribune,four Chicago (IL) firefighters suffered burns in a February 18 incident that involved a backdraft, adynamic fire eventthat occurs when flames have been deprived of oxygen and then reintroduced to oxygen, resulting in an explosion. The four suffered minor facial burns and were transported to local hospitals.
According to theTribune:
Three of the injured firefighters were just outside the front door of the 1 1/2-story house,when they were hit by flames blew out that door, [Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry]Langford said. The fourth firefighter was hit by the flames while on a ladder next to the door.
