Fire Damages CA Elementary School

Santa Cruz, CA – A small, private elementary school attached to United Methodist Church on California Street was damaged Wednesday morning by a fire.

Spring Hill School, a K-8 school with 120 students, suffered approximately $400,000 in damages in a fire that began just before 2 a.m. on an outside deck, according to Santa Cruz Fire Department officials.

Battalion Chief Mike Venezio said no one was injured. The cause remains under investigation.

The fire gutted the first-grade classroom as well as playground equipment, teaching materials, and storage space and water and smoke damage affected the fifth-grade classroom, school officials said.

The fire department received several emergency calls from people who said they could see large columns of smoke from several blocks away.
