Q. Why is a hydrant called a fire plug?Scroll down for the answer!

A. We know that the earliest water systems, which used hollowed-out logs to carry water, also were used for firefighting purposes. It is believed that during a fire, firefighters would dig down to the water main and drill a hole, allowing the water to escape. Once the fire was out, a wooden plug was placed in the hole to reseal the water main.
