Weldon Joins In Event To Raise Awareness About Home Safety Threat

Upper Darby, PA – Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA) joined the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) and area fire officials in the unveiling of a new technology aimed at enhancing the fire safety of mattresses. “A residential fire occurs every 77 seconds,” said Weldon. He added, “There is an urgent need to notify the public of the fire hazards in their homes, and what steps they can take to make their homes safer for their families.”

A recent study released by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that there were 3,900 fire fatalities last year in the United States, and as in previous years, eighty-two percent of these fatalities occurred in homes. Key to the NFPA report is the recommendation to consider fire safety in the design of home products.

主办的特拉华县(PA)紧急就是ce Training Center, fire officials demonstrated a technology new to mattress manufacturing by creating a live fire demonstration. The new design slows the burn rate of the mattress product, allowing fire victims more time to evacuate their homes. Additionally one hundred of these open-flame protective mattresses will be donated to the Community Action Agency of Delaware County, a non profit organization that, among many services, provides a continuum of housing services for local residents and their families.

A live burn test was followed by a discussion on various safety topics such as the importance of purchasing/testing smoke detectors, creating a fire escape plan, and looking for new open-flame mattress protection.
