Seattle (WA) Fire Department L6, consisting of Capt. Raul Angulo, Dino Gamino, and Don Henry Jr., responded to an elevator rescue for a stalled car. They overloaded the weight capacity. There were about 10-12 people inside the elevator. The car was stalled about 3 feet above the landing. After they secured the power and opened the doors, they assisted the occupants out. There were 3 little “hotties” 20-somethings–all with short skirts. They assisted them out. After they got everyone out, the girls said, “Oh, we were hoping to get some of the firefighters who were in the calendar!” Angulo quickly answered, “You did! We were in the 1980 calendar! Before you were born!”
Things with springs bounce
Capt. Raul Angulo of the Seattle (WA) Fire Department was asked about one of the most embarrassing moments of his career. His response follows:
I was working overtime on a Northend engine company. We had an apartment fire on floor 2 of a 3-story apartment. Fire was contained to the unit of origin. The members were overhauling and throwing stuff out the window. Sometimes smoldering mattresses and sofas burst into flames again when you take them outside. The fresh air gives them the needed oxygen and they flare up. So the members were getting ready to throw a smoldering sofa out the window into the yard. I said to them, “Why don’t you put a rope on that and lower it out?” They answered, “Don’t worry about it, Cap. We got it.” “OK, be careful. Make sure it’s all clear below,” I urged them.
They shoved the sofa out with enough clearance. The sofa burst into flames. As it hit the ground, on end, it bounced back toward the building and right through the living room window to the apartment below. Now I had a burning sofa on floor 1, a unit that was untouched by the original fire!

In Honor of a Fallen Brother
It is with deep sadness that we report the line-of-duty death of Cliffside Park (NJ) Volunteer Firefighter Cosmo Paris on January 8, 2014. Firefighter Paris was a member of the Cliffside Park Exempt Firemen’s Association and the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen’s Association and a trustee of the Cliffside Park Firemen’s Relief Association. He was also a member of the New Jersey Metro Fire Photographers Association. Known for his imagination and talent, he built the Halloween- and the Christmas-themed hook and ladder trucks pictured below. He will be missed by all who knew him and enjoyed his handiwork.
