Update, 1:20 p.m.:The U.S. Fire Administration reports that Fire Apparatus Operator Daryl Gordon, assigned to Cincinnati Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue 14,diedfrom injuries he sustained in a fall down an elevator shaft while working with fire crews to rescue the residents and extinguish a fire in a Madisonville neighborhood apartment building. Some of the residents were reported to have suffered smoke inhalation and one other firefighter was injured with second-degree burns in the fire. Investigation into the fatal incident continues by authorities. Gordon had 29 years of service.
Update, 10 a.m.:Cincinnati.com reports that the fallen firefighter has been identified as Daryl Gordon, 54.
UPDATE, 9:20 a.m.:According to Cincinnati.com, the University of Cincinnati Emergency-EMS department reports that the firefighter has died.

PREVIOUS:Afirefighterfell down an elevator shaft while trying torescueresidents from an apartment building today in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati, according to news reports.
Cincinnati.com (http://cin.ci/1yciz2T) reports that a Mayday was called on the fireground and it took officials several minutes to get to the down firefighter in the elevator, who reportedly was not breathing when crews found him.
There were a number of civilian casualties, as well, according to the report.
The fire occurred early this morning at Kings Tower Apartments. One resident toldThe Enquirerhe had to jump from his balcony on the second floor to escape.
