All the members of a volunteer fire department in a rural area of British Columbia, Canada, havequitafter their chief was suspended.
The 19 firefighters resigned in protest of thedisciplineof Fire Chief Jon Wollenberg, who was suspended for at least three months after he refused an order by regional officials to have his members direct traffic at a non-emergency meeting linked to a jet fuel spill in the area, according to a report fromThe Canadian Press(http://bit.ly/13FEQXq).
Wollenberg defended his decision, saying that if no emergency exists,volunteersshould not be forced to provide their services.
The two sides are slated to meet shortly, but until then, neighboring fire departments will assume fire coverage for the area, which is located in the Slocan Valley in the southeast part of the province.
