Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives Web Site Launched

Emmitsburg, MD – The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and PennWell Corporation have announce a new Web site,www.everyonegoeshome.com, established for the nationwide Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives program.

“PennWell, the publisher ofFire Engineering Magazine马,已经捐出其服务ke this Web site available to all firefighters,” said Chief Ron Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF. “It is PennWell’s commitment to the Initiatives program that has made this Web site possible. PennWell’s efforts, as well as those of many supporters, are providing opportunities to reduce firefighter fatalities all across America. This is a first for the NFFF and the American fire service and is part of an ongoing, comprehensive program to prevent firefighter deaths and injuries.”

Each year, more than 100 firefighters are killed in the line of duty in the United States, and approximately 100,000 firefighter injuries are reported. As a result of these significant numbers, the NFFF is working in partnership with the United States Fire Administration (USFA) to reduce these deaths. The Initiatives are funded by a Fire Act Grant through the Department of Homeland Security and a corporate donation from Fireman’s Fund.

“The number of line of duty death and injuries suffered by firefighters throughout this nation is unacceptable,” said U.S. Fire Administrator R. David Paulison. “These Initiatives should have a significant impact on health, safety and wellbeing of one of this nation’s greatest assets, the firefighters who dedicate themselves to the protection of their communities.”

In 2004, the NFFF hosted the first ever Firefighter Life Safety Summit to develop a national program to reduce the number of firefighter line-of-duty deaths occurring within the American fire service. The Summit developed 16 specific Initiatives aimed at achieving a 25% reduction in firefighter fatalities over the next five years and a 50% reduction over the next ten years. Since the Summit, the 16 Initiatives have been embraced throughout the fire service. The Web site addresses a full range of issues related to firefighter deaths, including the two leading causes: heart attacks and vehicle accidents.

“TheEveryone Goes HomeWeb site will greatly benefit firefighters, their families and co-workers, fire departments, and the general public by helping reduce the number of line-of-duty deaths and the impact of those tragedies on families and communities,” according to Hal Bruno, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The Web site has resources the fire service will find of value in support of the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ National Stand-Down Day on June 21, 2005.
