Mar. 8—SPRING TOWNSHIP — A trash collection employee whose left arm was trapped in the back of a garbage truck for nearly two hours Tuesday was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Spring Township police and the Logan Fire Department said.

Logan Fire Department Assistant Chief Charles Salvanish, whose career has spanned about 14 years, described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime” response.

“We discussed a plan for extrication, and went to a Plan B and a Plan C and Plan D,” Salvanish said. “It was a pretty in-depth extrication where we had to cut part of the garbage truck away so we could take his hand out.”

The 19-year-old Bellefonte man’s arm was stuck from about noon until 1:45 p.m. Tuesday along the 200 block of Upper Coleville Road. Neither police nor the fire department were certain how the man’s arm became trapped.

He was conscious as first responders worked to free him by cutting away part of the steel truck, Spring Township police officer Luke Nelson said. He was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries, Nelson said.

The man was an employee of Carson Disposal Service, whose President Richard Carson described it as a “fluke accident” that “could have been a lot worse.”

The Undine Fire Company, Pleasant Gap Fire Company, Alpha Fire Company, Citizen’s Hook and Ladder, Bellefonte EMS, Mount Nittany EMS and Eagle Towing and Recovery also responded.

Upper Coleville Road between West End Coleville Road and Lower Coleville Road was closed for more than two hours.
