Work of New Britain Fire Department.
A comprehensive report of the work done during the past year and of the equipment of the department at present has been prepared by Chief Robert M. Dame, of the fire department at New Britain, Conn There was small difference in the number of alarms answered during the fiscal year of 1910-11, the total being two in exeess of that for 1909-10. The fire loss was approximately $18,000 less than in 1909-10. showing that the department had been of a high standard. Extracts from the report made to the Public Safety Board follow:
During the year the department responded to 67 bell anil 93 still alarms, a total of 100, two more than last year. The losses amounted to $21,348 as compared with $12,353 last year. The force of the department remains the same as last year, 81 men, of whom 21 are permanent. There arc IS horses in the department, 16 are used on apparatus and two are spare. We have on hand 10,000 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose. 8,000 feet in good condition and the rest fair, also 1,000 feet of "3/4-inch chemical hose. The houses are all in fairly good shape with the exception of No. 2, which will have to have something done this year, as it is both unsanitary and unsafe. In renewing my recommendations of past years also recommend the purchase of 500 feet of 3inch hose with 2 1/2-inch couplings to be used on the spare wagon, also the purchase of ladders to equip the small truck now stored at No. 2, and the placing of it at No. 5 to be used in case of emergency.
