Author’s Note: There are few mysteries connected with the appalling loss of life by fire in the type of occupancies variously known as nursing and convalescent homes. The real mystery is why these obvious hazards are permitted to exist. But they do and in so doing bring—for the most part unjustly—a certain amount of discredit upon the nation’s fire service.
