In 1888 the Artesian Water Company of Memphis, Tenn., with thirty wells, could furnish only 6,000,000 gallons per day. Now, by means of a system devised and constructed under the supervision of Mr. Thomas Johnson lor the company, forty wells yield 30,000,000 gallons daily. To obtain this result a shaft 38 feet in diameter was sunk to a depth of 58 feet. In this shaft three vertical Worthington pumps were placed, each having a capacity of 10,000 gallons per day. In the centre of this shaft a well 10 feet in diameter was sunk 20 feet deeper. A tunnel was built connecting this well with all the artesian wells 75 feet under the ground. When the work was completed, a test was made to ascertain the supply to be obtained, and 30,000,000 gallons were pumped for three consecutive days. This has been repeated several times since with the same results. F.vcry gallon pumped isabsolutely pure, as the pipe connections are made 80 feet under ground.

At the Arcade File Works, Anderson, 1II.. where 36,000,000 gallons of water are used daily,a well has just been drilled 136 feet deep and 36 inches in diameter. When the pumps stop the water quickly rises to near the surface. The overflow or waste water from the factory cicates a pond as big as some reservoirs which supply water works.
