As, no doubt, during this period turbines have also been made by other firms in Italy, or imported from wellknown makers abroad, it is very likely that the amount of waterpower developed in Italy alone is not far short of 300,000-horse power. Also, a semi-official statement, published in France a short time ago. gives the amount of waterpower utilised in that country up to date at about 500,ooo-horsepower. Other similar figures have been obtained from other sources, and it is estimated that the total water horsepowerso far developed and utilised in connection with electricity is something between 1.500,000 and a.ooo.ooo-horsepower, exclusive. of course, of all the waterpower which is used direct for motive purposes without the intermediary of electricity. In twelve or fifteen years the development has been considerable, involving in such a short time a capital investment of something like $250,000,000 to $400,000,000 in hydroelectric power schemes. The United Kingdom contributes only a very small amount, certainly not more than io.ooo-horsepow er, to this gross total.
