The water mains were extended by the addition of 5358 feet of new pipe ranging in size from 24 to 6 inches. The total length of all the mains is 56 miles and 4777 feet. Twenty-three fire hydrants and 42 valves were placed on new work. The total cost of construction, which includes mains laid and hydrants and valves put in, was $12,456.70. The entire cost of the works to date, March 1, 1891, was $1,208,823 29. The bonded indebtedness is $378,500. The payments made last year for interest and sinking fund accounts were $27,660. Superintendent Dolan recommends the following work for this year : New roof on valve vault; the construction of a foot bridge from inlet pier, so that employees can go there at all seasons of the year; the steam cylinders and steam pipes to be recovered with nonconducting covering to prevent loss by condensation; the building of a new grating at inlet on west side of pier and masonry to be repointed. The ceilings and wells and outside woodwork of station to be painted ; a drain or sewer to be built from house to the river; sidewalks on Main street to be repaired and strengthened. Also the following on distribution : Extending 24-inch main down North Fourth street to connect with the present 24-inch main in said street, and the nutting in of two blow-offs in the southern end of the city for the purpose of cleaning the mains, and the building of a new barn in the rear of office.
