WATER WORKS OF NEWARK, N. J.

Sixteen years afterwards new works were completed, and in 1802 a new gravity supply was introduced by the East Jersey Water Company—the works being planned by Clemens Herschel, C. E , of New York. 1 he original source of supply was the Passaic river at Belleville and driven wells, from which the water was pumped. This is now held in reserve, while the new sourcethe sixty-three square miles of drainage area—each including water surfaces— of the Pequannock river is made use of—the water being impounded—the supply being by gravity to and from old low and high service reservoirs. The total capacity of the Pequannock reservoirs is g,122,000,000 gallons, as follows: Oak Ridge, on the Pequannock river, 2,555,000,000—area, 383 acres, drainage area, 21.3 square miles, high water, 836 feet above mean sea level; Clinton, on branch of the Pequannock, 3,518,000,000—area, 423 acres, drainage area, g.6 square miles, gg2 feet above mean sea level; Canistear, on the Pacack brook, 2,407.000,000—area, 323 acres, drainage area, 6 square miles, 1,086 feet above mean sea level; Echo lake, on branch of the Pequannock, 610,000,000—area, 276 acres, drainage area, 4.2 square miles, 8g2 feetabove mean sea level; Macopin intake, 32,000,000—area, 12 acres, crest of dam, 583.5 above mean sea level; Echo brook has been diverted into lake Macopin. into which also falls water from each reservoir in natural stream channels. From Oak Ridge reservoir it falls 252 feet in 9 miles; from Clinton, 408 feet in 7 miles; from Canistear 502 ft. in 15.8 miles, and from Echo lake,308 feet in 22 miles. The last two were added to the system in 1896 and have not yet been (through eventually they probably will be) turned over to the city by the East Jersey Company. Echo lake is a natural lake and Canistear an artificial one, bv reconstructing gates at whose outlet the pondage has, been made available. The capacity of the old distributing reservoirs was 44,000,000 gallons, of which Belleville received 14,000,000 -168.4 feet above mean sea level. Low service. 21,000,000 gallons—117 feet above mean sea level; South Orange avenue, high service, g,000,000 gallons—226.6 feet above mean sea level. There are three supply mains, of which two are twentyone miles long, being riveted steel pipes three-eighths to onefourth of one inch—one,forty-eight inches in diameter throughout and the other the same for 5.4 miles at the upper end.after which for fifteen and one-half miles it is forty-two-inch. The third main, which is also steel riveted, is made from onequarter-inch plates, five miles long from Belleville reservoir to South Orange avenue high service reservoir. There is a fall of two feet per thousand in the hydraulic grade of the main conduit, which reaches Belleville reservoir at an elevation of 355.I or 186.7 feet above water service. The hydraulic grade of the branch conduit to high service is 300 or 73.4 feet abov water level, as it was the intention of the city when making the contract to build a special high service reservoir at an elevation of 300 feet.
