The source of the water supply of Lawrence, Douglas county, Kan., is wells. There are a filtering gallery and a settling basin. The system is pumping to standpipe, the capacity of which is 340,000 gallons; capacity of reservoir 4,000,000 gallons. The pumping engines are Worthingtons, with a daily capacity of 3,500,000 gallons. One hundred and fifty-three hydrants are set, of the White, Corey, and Nelson make. Twenty miles of main pipe (Shickle, Howard, Harrison) four-inch to stxeeen-inch have been laid,with thirty valves. There are 175 meters in service, of the Thomson, Hersey, Crown, Union, Worthington, and Niagara make. The domestic pressure is 180 pounds; fire, 170. The works are owned by a company. They cost to construct about $100,000; annual expenses, $5,000. The manager is J. H. Jacobs.
