WATER SUPPLY ITEMS
The water supply of Rialto, Cal., is from two sources, the headwaters of Lytle Creek, the fourth largest stream in Southern California, and artesian wells, of which there are thirty-two and a half miles northeast of the town. The tract will also probably get water before long from the Arrowhead system. The water is distributed in iron or cement pipes to each twenty acres, the land being sold by the company with a water right of one inch to ten acres. The character of soil is such that it holds the moisture well, the subsoil being covered with decomposed granite to an average depth of a foot.
The Legislative State Committee on Water Supplies and Water Rights has been giving serious consideration to the peli. tion of the city of Malden and the towns of Melrose and Medford, Mass., for the exclusive control of Spot Pond, in order to maintain the purity of the water, and the remonstrance of the town of Stoneham against granting such rights. The matter has not been definitely settled, but as it is conceded that Stoneham has some rights in the pond, it is probable that a bill will be reported and passed which will give that town a voice in the management of the pond and the land bordering upon it.
