WATER SUPPLY

WATER SUPPLY

Miss Blanche Nevin, of Lancaster, Pa., has presented to the city a drinking fountain, to be built at West Orange street and Columbia avenue on land to be deeded to the city by the Hayes estate. The fountain, which will be of large size and of granite and marble elaborately carved, will be a memorial of the mother of the donor, the wife of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Nevin.

Last year the water commistiouers of New Britain, Conn., laid 10,801 feet of new pipe, of which 7,985 feet were laid in twelve different streets, and 2,916 feet of six-inch in four different streets to replace the old four-inch ami to give increased pressure. Twelve new hydrants were set during the year, making the total number now in use 331. Eight new meters ware also added—total, 166. The receipts for the year were $48,008.53, as against $46,517.80 in 1896 and $1,159.09 in 1851 when the water works were first built. The commissioners recommend substituting larger mains in some streets instead of the eight-inch, and four-inch pi pea now laid down. This would give a better supply in case of fire.
