WATER RATES
A proposed increase in the water rate of the city of Atlanta, Ga., from its present flat rate of 60 cents per month for a maximum of 800 feet of water, or 6,000 gallons, to $1.20 per month for the same quantity and the consequent increase to the 1917 revenue of about $500,000 is being discussed by the city officials.
The city council of Falls City, Ore., is to raise the water rates. That city constructed a water system in 1911, issuing bonds for $30,000. Rates were fixed by ordinance, but were so low that the income failed to take care of the interest on the bonds, the sinking fund and the expenses of administration. Direct taxation was necessary. This made a levy of 22 mills in Falls City imperative for the coming year. There has been objection to making up this deficit by direct taxation and the City Council decided upon raising the water rates.
