WATER IMPROVEMENTS FOR CLEVELAND.

WATER IMPROVEMENTS FOR CLEVELAND.

In a report on water works needs to Public Utilities Director C. W. Stage, of Cleveland, O., C. F. Schulz, Commissioner of Water Works, stated an additional bond issue of $2,500,000 should be authorized before the end of the year to complete projects now under way and those about to be started. This would bring the total water works issue for the year up to $5,000,000. The expenditures now proposed will, it is figured, care for the city for many years to come. The new tunnel under way will give capacity enough to care for a population of 2,000.000. The proposed new $2,500,000 expenditure is divided by Commissioner Schulz as follows: $500,000 additional for rehabilitation of the old Division avenue N. W. pumping station; $1,000,000 for the east side filtration plant and for pumps for the Kirtland station; $1,000,000 for the new reservoir on the Heights overlooking the present Fairmount reservoir. The capacity of this reservoir will be 100,000,000 gallons. The originally estimated cost was $600,000, but it has been found that the reservoir must be covered if the water is to be filtered. “Cleveland has been growing at such a rapid rate lately that the necessity for all of these things has come at one time." said Commissioner Schulz. “The new Division avenue filtration plant has cost a large sum of money and construction of the tunnel and East Side filtration plant also will mean a large outlay. We have not completed the new schedule of water rates that will be in effect after the filtration plant in service.” This statement by Commissioner Schultz shows that while Cleveland is growing the water department is fully alive to the situation and is preparing to keep pace with the growth.
