WATER FOR FIRE PROTECTION AT NEW ORLEANS.
In consequence of the litigation now being carried on in the Federal court between the city of New Orleans and the Waterworks company (now in the hands of a receiver), it seems as if the laying of the water main and the setting of fireplugs in the Sixth district, where they are so much needed, will not be accomplished. The city council has just passed an ordinance requiring the company to extend the water main through Magazine street, in order that fifteen fireplugs might be set on the street between Napoleon and Peters avenues, which the mayor preferred not to approve until the legal status could be discussed. A conference between the city officials, the underwriters, and Receiver Howard, of the Waterworks company, has brought out the fact that, while the latter desired to do what was needed, and while there was plenty of money to make the improvements. his attornevs had decided that he could not do so, unless ordered by the court. The outcome is, therefore, doubtful.
