Volunteers Killed in Apparatus Crash
Two Finleyville, Pa., volunteer fire fighters were killed on Sunday, September 13, and a third died of injuries the following day, when the apparatus they were riding on in response to an alarm plunged off the road and was wrecked. Six others were injured including Fire Chief Charles Crayton whose condition was listed as critical.
Killed in the crash were Assistant Chief John Stark, 45, driver of the 750-gpm pumper, and Arvin Kegel, 32, who was also a Union Township policeman. Philip L. Simmons, 52, chairman of the Union Township Board of Supervisors, died of multiple injuries the following day.
