We present herewith cuts of a vertical pumping engine, in two styles, manufactured by Wheeler & Tappan, 12 and 14 South Jefferson street, Chicago, Ill. This engine has a 10-inch steam cylinder and 36-inch stroke. We also present a cut of the working barrel showing the foot valve and lower plunger or bucket. This outfit is expressly designed for nonflowing artesian wells, where the water does not rise to a sufficient height to allow pumping with an ordinary horizontal pump. The working barrel complete, is made entirely of brass, with balanced brass ball valves, with leather packing in the foot valve. The engine is provided with cushion valves in the steam chest, allowing the use of the exhaust steam to cushion the piston at either end of cylinder, thus rendering the working of the engine almost noiseless, and preventing jar on the rods connecting the lower and upper plunger.

All workmanship and material are guaranteed by the makers first-class in every respect. The pumps are especially recommended for fire systems for filling reservoirs and tanks, experience having shown that it costs a considerable sum for water in small towns, where automatic sprinklers are used, for the necessary reserve in case of fire. Those requiring pumping engines of this description will do well to correspond with Wheeler & Tappan, who will accord courteous treatment to anyone dealing with them, and purchasers will find the engines in every way as represented.
