Turkish Parliament Building Burned.
美丽的宫殿Cheragau,病重kish parliament met at Constantinople, was entirely destroyed by fire on Jan. 19. It was built by Sultan Andul-Azis and was the finest of the palaces on the Bosphorus. It was constructed of marble and the interior was remarkable for the beauty of the sculptured ornaments in marble and wood. For many years it was the home of the deposed Sultan. Murad V., and inaccessible to visitors. When Turkey was granted a parliament, a little over a year ago, the Cheragau palace. which the Sultan no longer occupied, was assigned as its meeting place. The fire originated between the private apartments reserved for the Sultan and the Chamber of Deputies, and is believed to have been due to defective heating apparatus, although there have been reports current that reactionary agents were responsible for it. The fire started shortly before noon, and a strong wind fanned the flames, which spread with great rapidity. Little furniture and very few of the important documents were saved. Practically all the archives ofthe Chamber of Deputies, including legislative measures under consideration, the budget, etc., were destroyed, the few articles in the shape of furniture, etc., rescued, being saved by sailors from the war ships in the harbor, the American Jackies” doing notably good work. The intrinsic loss is very great, the building alone, which was utterly destroved, having cost to build, about $16.000,000.
