Tractor is Practically Uninjured in Smash-Up
Two firemen narrowly escaped death recently when the tractor drawn fire engine of Co. 43, Philadelphia struck a deep rut and swerved, ploughed through a pile of stone, over a curb and crashed through a wooden fence and fell into the cellar of a building being erected on Market Street. Both men on the machine stuck to their positions and went into the cellar with it. Lieut William Kennedy, who was riding on the rear of the engine, jumped from it just as the front hit downward into the cellar. He found one man, 1 liman, lying in a pile of debris, and the other, Lancaster, under the engine which had turned over crumpling the dome against the inner wall and sinking the tractor into the floor. The engine had been out on a demonstration and was returning to the engine house. The tractor, one of the Christie type, was practically uninjured, except for a crushed radiator. The weight of the machine complete including the steamer is 7 tons. The machine can be repaired.
