TOPICS OF THE DAY.

THE leading social event in Boston fire circles is the annual ball of the fire and protective departments, which takes place this year on Monday evening, the twenty-first instant. The proceeds of this ball go to the relief fund of the departments, of which Mayor O’Brien and other well-known gentlemen are trustees; and purchasers of tickets, besides the assurance of a pleasantly spent evening may reflect that they are contributing to a very worthy object.

THE strong objection of the Volunteer Firemen’s Association of * New York city to the payment of any part of the two per cent tax upon foreign insurance companies to the fire patrol, as proposed by Senator Dunham in his bill recently presented in the legislature, has led to the introduction of another bill by Senator Plunkett, which provides that the whole sum shall be paid in to the Exempt Firemen’s Benefit Fund. A lively fight over these bills may be expected.
