TOPICS OF THE DAY

IN about two years the city of New York, if all goes right, will possess another creditable public structure in the new criminal court building, a plan for which has just been adopted. It will stand on the lot bounded by Centre, White, Elm and Franklin streets, will be as nearly as possible fireproof, will be 115 feet in height, and is to cost $1,400,000. The architects are Thom, Wilson & Scharschmidt. The building is badly needed, and it is to be hoped that its construction will not be delayed.

WE print elsew'here the address made by Presiing Whiting of the Orient Insurance Company at the Connecticut State Firemen’s Convention at Hartford this week, and commend it to our readers’ attention. It is full of good, common sense views upon some subjects which are too often treated in a vein of gush, insincere and anything but complimentary to the intelligence of the thinking firemen of to-day. Mr. Whiting is a sensible business man, understands his subject, and is not afraid to speak his mind.
