TOPICS OF THE DAY
IN one day the telegraph brings news of the wholesale consumption by fire of two prime necessaries of man to such an extent as we cannot remember before having had occasion to record. At Chicago 10,500,000 eggs were roasted all at once, and at Key West, Fla., over 1,000,000 cigars, besides a large quantity of valuable Havana tobacco, reeked unto high heaven. Smokers and housewives alike must grieve at this waste of good things.
THE ugliness of the outside balcony fire escapes in use in most of our large cities has been frequently urged by propertyowners as a reason for not placing them upon handsome apartment houses and buildings of a like character. Of late, however, the makers of these appliances have been giving considerable attention to the feature of appearance, and the result is that in some cases already this sole remaining objection to the fire escape has been done away with. The iron work of the fire escapes which have been placed on several of the newer office buildings in Boston, for example, really add to the attractiveness of these structures. Those who objected to the fire escapes upon testhetic grounds have, therefore, not a leg left to stand upon.
