THERE have been singularly few large fires in and about New York during the past month, and even in the West the fire losses have been less than, in view of the recent severe drought, it was supposed they would be. It is to be hoped that this will not prove to be merely a temporary let up.

ATLANTA, Ga., with 60,000 inhabitants, had in 1886 only 142 alarms of fire; the damage to buildings exceeded $1000 in only two instances, and but once did the loss on contents amount to more than this sum. It is a significant fact that the city has a rigid ordinance upon the subject of carelessness or negligence in guarding against fires.
