TOPICS OF THE DAY.

LAST week witnessed the destruction of a house in which was written probably the most widely read work of fiction ever published. It was the old stone building at Andover, Mass., in which Harriet Beecher Stowe lived with her husband while engaged upon the pages of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and for ten year’s afterwards. After the Stowes left it the house was used as a boarding place for theological students, and has been a great object of interest to all visitors to Andover. It is supposed that the fire was started by burglars.

SOME time ago we noted the fact that the importers of crude rubber had made a combination to advance the price of that article, and stated at the time that this would probably affect the price of all rubber goods. As we predicted, a meeting of rubber goods manufacturers was held in this city on Tuesday last, the object being to form a combination to fix the price of standard goods at a point which would give the manufacturers a working profit. Several of the manufacturers of rubber hose were present at the meeting, but as the delegates sat with closed doors, their transactions were not made public. As the best quality of rubber is used extensively in the manufacture of fire hose, both in the rubber hose proper and in the lining of cotton hose, there will necessarily have to be an advance in the selling price of these goods if the raw material is to be maintained at its present standard.
