IT is now reported that the recent great fire at Haukow, China, which destroyed 500 junks and houses and about 1000 lives, was caused by the combination, heretofore supposed to be exclusively American, of a foolish cook and an oil can. The fellow was pouring kerosene oil into a stove to hurry up matters. He was probably a returned emigrant. So do the baleful effects of our boasted civilization make themselves felt even in the Celestial empire.
THERE is a variety of posts and poles in New York streets. There are lamp-posts, jewelers posts surmounted by clocks, fire department poles, Western Union telegraph poles, electric light poles and poles for the electric light wires, barbers poles, and police signal box poles. The Tribune thinks that all that is wanting now to complete the equipment of our streets is the North pole, and then the average New Yorker ought to be satisfied.
