Hook and Ladder Company 4号的Michael J. Stephens获得了Bennett奖牌。In a fire in the tenement house, at No. 164 Attorney street, at three o’clock in the morning of September 4, 1904, Stephens saved the lives of Moses, Aaron and Samuel Kritner, aged fourteen, twelve and eight years, respectively. To Adam J. Metzler, of hook and ladder company No. 21, was awarded the Bonner medal for a rescue made in a fire at No. 355 West Thirty-seventh street, on FeDruary 19, 1904. Patrick J. Moran, of hook and ladder company No. 8, was given the Strong medal. In a fire at No. 483 Broadway, on June 29, 1904, Edwin J. Levy, foreman of the company, was overcome by smoke and gas while fighting the fire on the first floor, and became unconscious. The first floor, cellar and subcellar were 1 cavily charged with smoke, gas and heat; but Moran, at great personal risk, went to the aid of the foreman and brought him to the street, still unconscious. For bravery in a fire at No. 2001 Third avenue on May 14, 1904, the Trevor-Warren medal was bestowed on William Weber, of engine company No. 35. When the company reached the fire, the blaze had extended to the fourth floor, and inmates of the house were hanging out of the windows crying for help. Weber ascended a ladder to the fourth floor and rescued Mrs. Tessie Klebs and her eight-monthsold child. John B. Conlon, foreman of engine company No. 78, was Stephenson medalist for the best disciplined company during the year, and the Citizen medal went to John W. Larkin, of engine company No. 106, Brooklyn. After the presentation of the medals there was an exhibition by the life-saving corps in the yard, and a fire drill, in which an alarm was sent in and answered in the usual way by engine company No. 39 and truck company No. 16. Mayor McClellan, in presenting the medals, said that, while intrinsically they may be of little value, to the wearers, the department and the people of New York, they “mean far more than the mere gold and silver that is in them. The work which has earned the medals would have been done without them. They are the mere recognition of what, has been done as part of the day’s work, of what is done every day in the year by the men of the fire department of the city of New York.” The mayor addressed each of the “honor men’’ drawn up before him, and, before pinning the medal on his breast, called the attention of the gathering to the specific deed of daring thus rewarded. An exhibition of life-saving and kindred fire drill was then given, after which an alarm was turned in from the box at the corner of Lexington avenue and Sixty-seventh street, which called out Engine company 76, operated by the crew of Flngine company No. 39. and hook and ladder company No. 77. The former threw streams over the roof of the Seventh regiment armory, and the ladder company raised their ladder seventy-five feet up against the side of the armory tower.
