TOPICS OF THE DAY
IN the statement of large fires in January, which we copied from the Commercial Bulletin, Chicago was charged with one fire whereby a loss of $100,000 was incurred. Chief Swenie naturally objects to being held accountable for a loss that did not occur in his bailiwick. The fire referred to occurred in the town of Lake, outside the corporate limits of Chicago, and not included in the property of that city. Chief Swenie sent three steamers to assist his neighbors on that occasion, but had no responsibility either in the management of the fire or for the loss incurred. As a matter of fact, Chicago had 122 fires in January with a total loss of only $48,000. Will the Commercial Bulletin please make a note of the above?
WE have received an invitation to the fourth annual ball of the Boston Fire Department, to be given Wednesday evening, February 21, at Mechanics’ Hall. The proceeds of the ball are to be donated to the Boston Firemen’s Relief Fund for the benefit of the active members of the Boston Fire and Protective Departments. The present trustees of the fund are Mayor Palmer and Fire Commissioners John E. Fitzgerald, Henry W. Langley and Edward S. White. The annual balls of the Boston Department have always been social and financial successes, and extra exertions are being put forth to make the coming festival unusually brilliant and attractive. Whatever the Boston Firemen undertake to do in this matter will be weH done beyond question. We regret that a recent domestic bereavement will prevent our being present on this occasion, but we send our best wishes for the success of the entertainment, and the assurance that THE JOURNAL will be represented.
