TOPIC OF THE DAY
ANYONE having the first volume of THE JOURNAL, and desiring to dispose of it, is requested to address this office, naming price. Many persons are preserving their JOURNALS and having them bound from year to year. Some who were not subscribers at first have ordered from us the earlier numbers to complete their sets, but we are now unable to supply the first volume complete, having only the bound volumes necessary to our library. We have now an order to supply back volumes, and desire to obtain all the numbers of 1877-78 constituting the first volume. THE JOURNAL was the pioneer paper devoted to the fire service, and is consequently In demand by the “ old vets,” who delight in preserving everything relating to their business. We will pay a fair, but not a fancy, price for the numbers of the first volume.
记者了a readable letter, requesting that it be printed this week, but as it bears no memorandum as to place we cannot print it. Correspondents often wonder why their letters are not jiublished, and it is for such reasons as that stated that we are obliged to consign many letters to the waste-basket. Any letter written carefully, containing news about firemen and fire matters in particular localities are always admitted to these columns. We wish to caution correspondents also against sending in reports of fires of no more than ordinary significance. If we attempted to print from week to week a record of the fires in the various places where we have correspondents, THE JOURNAL would have to contain many more pages than it does. Fires should be referred to only in connection with some special news, like accident to firemen or apparatus, or other interesting event. Writers should also be reminded to write on only one side of the paper. If anyone sending in a communication will be careful to conform to the conditions stated, he can rely on having his letter printed.
