They Will Save $60,000.
Some weeks ago the commissioners of public works and Superintendent Drexelius of the Buffalo (N. Y.) bureau of water put their heads together and came to the conclusion that the city was pumping millions of gallons of water into the mains from which there was no return. It was decided to inspect the buildings of the consumers and if possible to stop the leak. A number of special inspectors were set to work and the result was astonishing but decidedly gratifying. The work of inspection is now fairly under way and the reinspection by experienced inspectors began. The reinspection will not cover the entire city but only where a large difference is lound or where the department has reason to believe a mistake has been made.
Superintendent Drexelius estimates fiom the returns of the inspectors that an increase of not less than ten per cent will be realized in the water rates for the ensuing year over last year through the reinspection alone. The total receipts for 1892 were almost $600,000 and on the basis of the ten per cent addition the receipts for the coming year will be $600,000 additional exclusive of the new extensions.
