The Woonsocket Water System
Woonsocket,R。I. R. Worthington,Deane Steam Pump Company和Builders Iron Foundry。 The present estimated population is 45,060 and the estimated population on lines of pipe is 51,850. The estimated population supplied is 51,500. The total consumption for the year ending November 30 last was 653,950,000 gallons, of which 544,396,495 gallons passed through meters. The percentage of consumption metered was S3.2 per cent. The average daily consumption was I,791,644 gallons, being 34.5 gallons per day to each inhabitant, and 34.7 gallons per day to each consumer, and 456 gallons per day to each tap. Statistics relating to distribution system (including Manville extension) are: The mains range in size from four inch to twenty inch. 4,241 feet of mains were extended during the year, the total now in use being 63,823 miles, Fifteen hydrants were added last year, making 736 in use. The range of pressure on the mains was 50 pounds to 120 pounds. The total of service pipes in use is 11,761 miles. The number of service taps added last year was 177, making the number now in use, 3,928, not including standpipes for street sprinkling, connections for sewers, flushings, etc. Data concerning the Manville Extension distribution is given as follows: The total amount of distribution pipe is 23,630.75 feet, or 4,475 miles. The number of hydrants in use is 33. The number of stop gates in use is 39. The total number of service taps is 227, five being added last year. Three meters were added making 218 in use. Financial statistics given show, that the receipts totaled $181,001.81 of which $2,185.00 was for fixture rates and $103,282.72 was for meter rates. The department expenditures were: total maintenance, $27,568.49 ; total construction, $25,019.43. The balance was $181,601.81. The bonded debt is given as $733,000.00 and the value of sinking fund, $234,931.39. Relative to the pumping station the following description of the pumps is given; Type—one Worthington, compound, duplex, direct acting, with independent condenser. Capacity, 1,000,000 gallons in 24 hours. Type—one Worthington, high pressure, duplex, direct acting, with independent condenser, capacity, 1,000,000 gallons in 24 hours. Type—one Deane, compound, duplex, direct acting, with independent condenser. Capacity, 2,500,000 gallons in 24 hours. Capacity per revolution, as used in caldilating duty, (Deane), 70 gallons. Type—one d’Auria, horizontal, tandem, compound, duplex, direct acting, with independent condenser. Capacity, 5,000,000 gallons in 24 hours. The water commissioners are: William F. Norton, chairman; Alphonse Gaulin, clerk; Thomas Bertenshaw. The superintendent is Carleton Scott. The commissioners in their report stated that the board would, as stated in the previous year’s report, ask the city council during the coming year to appropriate funds to increase the pumping capacity at the pumping station. They also say: Owing to the large amount of construction work done during the year in relaying small mains with larger pipe and in making extensions to the piping system, nothing had been done looking to increased storage capacity since the purchase of the tank lot in Fairmount, but this year the Board will ask the City Council to establish the lines and grade on Rhodes avenue, so that much of the preliminary work towards the laying of a large main to the lot and the building of a large storage tank or reservoir thereon may be planned for. Superintendent Carleton Scott in his report says the entire system of main piping has been strengthened and extensions covering a little more than 4,200 were made. Superintendent Scott says: A new pump of at least a five-million gallon rate from the present station, to insure uninthe No. 1 reservoir, in a building entirely separate from the present station, to insure uninterrupted service in case of any serious accident to the present plant. He also says in his report: In the laying of service connections and the setting of meters the department has had a busy season: 177 new services have been added, making a total of 3,928. 137 new meters have been added, making a total of 3,837. The customary' assistance has been rendered consumers in our efforts to prevent the waste of water, and 707 postal card notices have been mailed. As a result of our efforts along this line we are able to report a per capita consumption of 34.7 gallons in 24 hours; and 84.2 per cent, of all water pumped can be accounted for.
